I have attempted converting a bootable DMG to an iso file, but after a 6 hour upload time, the iso file fails to save to the datastore in the same way as the much smaller Xubuntu iso files did.

I have also successfully uploaded an iso file for Xubuntu and installed that on a virtual host.Ĭurrently we are trying to install Mac OS X 10.9 to a virtual host, but we are having difficulty with booting from the install media remotely. The Hypervisor ESXi 5.5 system is currently running (successfully) a copy of LifeSize ClearSea vServer. Attach your system to a battery backup to reduce the number of boots unplanned system reboots. OS X allows you to change the default boot partition however, it does not allow the user to select the ESXi partition as the default, which is why a user must select this partition manually on each boot. After ESXi is installed on it's own partition, a technician or user must be present as the system boots to select the bootable partition. I am currently running ESXi 5.5 on a mid-2012 ApplePro. I will verify all that Darius has said about the installation of ESXi. It might work on 5.1 (although without official support). Like I said, though, I have not done this in ages, so it's entirely possible I may have forgotten something important.Īnother thing to note: OS X 10.9 is not officially supported on ESXi 5.0 or 5.1. Once you have ESXi up and running, you should be able to install OS X guests on that host. From that point on, I think it should be the same as a regular ESXi boot and/or installation. You should then see an icon for the CD or USB key with ESXi on it. The main difference is that you need to hold down the Option key immediately after powering on the Mac, and hold it down until you see a list of bootable devices.

It's been a looooooooong time since I actually did this, so the following might not be entirely trustworthy: You should be able to install ESXi onto your Mac Pro in much the same way as on any other computer.
